EXPLORING SIEM REAP COUNTRYSIDE

When most people think of Siem Reap, they think of the Angkor Wat temple complex. While the majestic temples are the highlight of any trip to Cambodia, Siem Reap has much more to offer to those who are willing to spend a little more time and explore beyond the glory of the temples. Siem Reap is also a great place for adventurous cyclists to explore. Traveling at such a gentle speed allows for much more interaction with the locals. Although bicycles are common in Cambodian villages, cycling tourists are still very much a novelty and will be warmly welcomed in small villages.

There is little that compares to cycling though a village to enable interaction with local people.  Photo opportunities abound and it's the small things you see along the way that make this such a special trip.  Local barbers cutting hair in traditional barber shop chairs or basic wooden stools in wooden shanties, women frying food to sell, children practicing their skills fishing in the rivers.  There are plenty of great things to see along the way.

At 8.00am we meet at “beyond” and have15mins of Khmer language lessons for making communication with the villagers. Once you have mastered a few basic words we cycle along the red soil roads through some of the farming villages with stilted households that are purposely built to avoid flooding and to keep them cool in hot months.

Stop on the way and have a glimpse of the craft places where the people use sugar palm leaves to make mats and vine for baskets and rubbish bins. This is also the chance to capture some amazing photos of the village ladies in their traditional Sarong and checked scarves.

Visit a local school and active monastery, exploring the monk’s way of life.
• Lunch break and rest( Packed lunch)
Resuming our journey through some other villages to the man-made lake built in the 11th century, take a boat trip to an island centering the reservoir and discover its ancient ruin.  Learn about how this reservoir helped support an entire empire and links to the temple complex.
